Factors to Consider
Think About Feeling
The first step in your interior style discovery journey requires nothing more than stopping and thinking.
Of course, at some point, you will focus on how you want your home to look. But it’s also very important to define exactly how you want your home, or any particular space, to feel. It’s like trying to bake a cake without knowing what you want it to taste like. These two things go hand in hand.

Take a walk to your favourite place to clear your mind and think. Or sit in your favourite spot in your home, close your eyes, and imagine what your ideal home might look like. Alternatively, if it feels right, you can also talk to someone you care about or want to be part of the process.
At this stage, it is important not to focus on what you don’t like about your home. it doesn’t help. And you don’t have to imagine what things should look like. It’s amazing.
Imagine how you want it to be.
Here are some of the common adjectives that come up when people talk about how they want their home to feel.
- cozy
- relaxing
- restful
- peaceful
- fresh
- clean
- inviting
- airy
- elegant
Choose keywords for your Interior
What are the keywords that describe the feel of your home? It doesn’t have to be the words above. You can use whatever you like. Select two or three keywords and write them down somewhere. Refer to these words whenever you see an inspiring picture.

Please be sure to refer to these words when purchasing products. Don’t lose the feel of your home. Understanding how you want your home to feel is very important and will ultimately guide you through this whole process. It’s okay to have a lot of keywords. The more words you say, the more clarity you have about how you want your home to feel
Contemporary or Traditional?
Trying to find a style for your interior can be overwhelming. To keep things simple, I’d like to break things down into his two big main categories of interior design styles: contemporary and traditional. Everything else just drips from there.
- Contemporary is often characterized by clean lines, clean surfaces and simple furnishings. It has a minimalist feel with lots of negative space. Contemporary styles include minimalism, mid-century modern, and most Scandinavian designs, including the hybrid style Japandi.
- Traditional is often characterized by ornate details, rich textures and heavy furnishings. Think crown moulding, intricate ornamentation, and rich architectural detail. Traditional styles include Colonial, Victorian, Neoclassical, Modern Farmhouse, Boho/Eclectic, Cottage and Coastal.
What If I Like Elements Of Both?
You may feel you like a combination of multiple styles. This is perfectly normal and completely normal. As mentioned above, most people enjoy a mix of traditional and modern elements.

I always say that the best designs combine multiple styles. When you’re just starting, try to keep a maximum of two styles and do a mix of 80% of one style and 20% of the other.
Styles such as Modern Farmhouse and Japandi are perfect examples of hybrid styles that work very well. How to cleverly combine design styles is, of course, a topic that deserves its contribution. Stay tuned, I’m working on it! Although not required, being able to ‘tag’ styles makes it easier to find inspiration when you need it.
Get Acquainted with Pinterest
Remember the keyword you saved earlier? Use it now! And remember that every image you save as inspiration should convey those feelings personally in some way! to start with. It doesn’t have to be real. You don’t have to redecorate your room at all.
But pretending to work in a specific space allows the brain to do concrete work. Create a Pinterest board and save the images you love that communicate the feeling you’re going for.
The more you start to figure out the various puzzle pieces, such as what colour you want to use, or what decorating style speaks to you most, the more you can narrow down your Pinterest searches by using more specific keywords.
Study your Inspiration
“What appealed to you about this picture? Why did it stop me?”.
Maybe it’s the colour you are attracted to. It doesn’t matter what style your bathroom or other space is. Look at each element you like and write it down. Just because you see an image with elements you don’t have or want in your home, that doesn’t mean you can’t borrow other elements to take inspiration from that image.
Or maybe you decide you don’t like the chandelier pictured above. That’s a sign that glass or crystal chandeliers aren’t for you. Or, if you find that you don’t like traditional lighting at all, you can look into more contemporary pendant lights.

Refine
By now you should:
- Have an idea of how you want your home (or a room in your home) to feel
- Have your special keywords
- Know whether you prefer an overall more contemporary or a more traditional look
- Have a Pinterest board that contains inspirational images with notes against many of the images.
You’re going to keep narrowing it down until there’s a clear answer that speaks to your personality and style.
Finding your interior design style is a process that takes time. Most of the time it will be fine, but sometimes rushing into making style decisions can become costly mistakes. Take your time!
You will know you’re there when you see an image, and at a glance, you can pick out exactly what you like and don’t like about it, know if it will work in your space, and then move on.

Additionally, you can hire an interior design expert for just one or two consultations. This will help you orient yourself in the right direction without straining your arms or legs.
Look At Your Wardrobe
Some people suggest paying attention to your clothing choices when trying to figure out your design style. This tip may or may not work for you depending on how careful you are with your clothing. Yes, but I can see how this tip can serve as a starting point for some people, or as a way to hone your personal style. It seems that you can learn it quickly.
Don’t get too hung up on labelling your style. If an official designation such as ‘Contemporary’ helps you achieve that, great! If not, fine. What matters is having the tools and the confidence to make decisions about your interior and ultimately express yourself in a way that makes you happy.
